Cary’s seventh grade choir director told him to see her after class. As usual, he though he was in trouble. He showed up and so did three other students. The director called them to the piano and put up some music. This became Cary’s first a cappella group. They sang together throughout seventh and eighth grade.
In high school and college, Cary was a vocalist and instrumentalist. After college he joined the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), the largest international a cappella organization. He had the opportunity to study music theory with a prolific 1930's big band and barbershop arranger.
Cary’s experience includes directing, coaching and arranging for jazz choirs, barbershop quartets and choruses, pop choirs, and a cappella ensembles. He gives voice lessons to all ages and abilities.
Cary is currently a Music Judge in the BHS. He judges and coaches vocal groups in the United States and Canada. When not working with Wicked Pitch of the West, Cary directs a senior men’s barbershop chorus and, for the last twenty years, has directed the 150-member Tempe Community Chorus.
